A £5M expansion to one of Scotland’s busiest logistics depots, for the multinational shipping line and haulier DFDS. The development site covered an area of 2 hectares and included a new 2500m2 chilled storage space, a new entrance and office building and lorry and car parking areas, along with extensive new infrastructure to support the expanded facility. Our approach was to use large scale and simply articulated elements which are able to anchor the building and provide structure and definition within of the industrial context.
With space on the site limited and a significant increase to the office accommodation required, our solution was to build a slim extension onto the front of the offices, to house a new reception space, staircase and lift accessing a new upper floor, constructed on top of the steel frame of the existing office building. A sculptural pre-cast concrete stair runs up the side of a triple height light-slot, linking the three floors of accommodation, with changing and canteen facilities on ground floor, an open plan office on 1st and meeting and management offices on the new top floor.
