Kilmun is a village on the northern edge of Holy Loch, on the southern coast of the Cowal Peninsula. We were approached to examine options for a residential development on a steeply sloping site with a fantastic, open aspect to the south. The design includes two rows of houses, placed on contour lines that run from east to west across the site, meaning that each house matches the height of the one adjacent to it, within each row. The houses are set at equal spacings and on a curved geometry that echoes that of the bay immediately infront of the site.
Each house is conceived as a simple and refined villa; a series of cubicĀ forms set into the landscape and organised to maximise the outlook to the loch. Timber construction, planted roofs and sustainable energy sources areĀ incorporated into the design.
