Built in 1900, The Square is located amidst the stunning scenery of the Dunira Estate, west of the Perthshire village of Comrie.
The project focuses on the northern wing of The Square, which had fallen into disrepair. The upper and a lower storeys were seperated into individual apartments, each occupying a floor of a new extension constructed in the rear garden. The existing building interiors were stripped back to the original stonework before being refurbished and large, arched openings to the courtyard facade were reinstated. The character of the extension is contemporary, but sits sympathetically in relation to the context with strongly defined gable ends in white timber cladding, punctuated by large, simple glazed openings.
Planning consent was obtained in early 2019, with completion of the works in mid-2022
Uninhabited for many years, the building was in very poor condition. The careful process of peeling back the dilapidated layers of construction and then installing new elements of structure was a complex undertaking, transforming the building from a derelict shell into a series of light and comfortable spaces.
A two storey extension was added on the north side of the property, creating additional accommodation for both upper and lower apartments. Strongly defined gable ends, with an extruded chimney-shaped profile, add to the varied roofscape of the original building.
